SHOT IN THE DARK

It felt odd, stripping off the personas and returning to simply being Alex.
Neither identity had uncovered much of interest in the last few weeks, so his superiors had assigned him an additional, one-off assignment, a basic assassination that shouldn’t even make him break a sweat. Harvey Jones was, as far as he could tell, exceptionally unexceptional aside from his recent desire to organise riots. Brown hair, brown eyes, average height. The sort of person who was almost instantly forgettable, if Alex hadn’t spent hours studying the photo he had been given. In his line of work, there was no room for mistakes, especially not on an assignment that should be a breeze.
He’d dressed simply, basic black combat suit and head covered by dark folds of material, half hiding the night vision goggles that covered his eyes. Given the relative harmlessness of the target and importance of stealth, he’d kept to the basics, plasma knife strapped to his thigh and pistol holstered at his belt. Garrotte wire was coiled in his sleeve, ready to be pulled out at a moment’s notice, and he’d included a pair of smoke grenades just in case he needed to disappear.
Alex had been watching the mill since early afternoon, noting that most of the workers had poured out when the day had finished, leaving the mill mostly silent and rather desolate. Clear and dark, it was nearly perfect conditions to infiltrate, but he couldn’t shake off the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. It was cold enough to make him shiver and he frowned in annoyance, unused to these feelings of doubt. He’d taken on harder assignments without worry.
He moved around the back of the building until he found a promising window. It only took a few moment to jiggle the lock lose and push the glass up, hardly a sign that the mill would be difficult to infiltrate. He pushed himself inside silently and dropped into a crouch to the side, shoving himself against the wall so that the light from outside wouldn’t outline him. Nothing. Just an empty room, tools abandoned in one corner. Jones’ appearance had given the impression of some sort of management, so it was unlikely Alex was going to find him down in the main workshops. He’d better start having a look around for some stairs.

QUEST THREAD |
GUARD CHECK GUARD CHANCE 1ST ROOM, 1ST FLOOR - 0% GUARD CHANCE 2ND ROOM, 1ST FLOOR - 100%
OUTCOMES - AUTOMATIC GENERATION Alex's presence has not been noticed as of yet but he also knows the ground floor of the mill would not contain the man he is looking for. He must pass through one giant room before finding the stair case he requires. It is as he comes to these conclusions that he notices the guard. STEALTH & PER CHECK REQUIRED STEALTH & PER - STEALTH 7, PER 5-9 PLAYER STAT- STEALTH 5, PER 7.
OUTCOMES - PARTIAL FAILURE The room before Alex containing the staircase contains one guard. With your PER of 7 you will see some of his stats and identify he does not have an affinity. No guard you encounter will have an affinity on this quest. This stat check will not continuously be performed; therefor every guard that Alex encounters will not have all stats displayed and he will be seen by them. Unfortunately due to not meeting the STEALTH check, the guard sees you moments after you see him. PTB will post after you post along with a battle outcome. |

Two rooms later and Alex finally spotted the stairs, though it seemed it wouldn’t be quite as easy as simply sauntering up and finding Jones without detection. He paused as he entered, debating ducking back out, but the guard on the stairs had already spotted him. Irritating – he had hoped to avoid any threats – but best to deal with him quickly, before he could raise the alarm. Incapacitating him was a possibility, but it would likely take too long and leave a threat behind better. Better just to kill him and keep moving before the body was discovered.
He debated the pistol, but best not to chance a shot in case the noise brought any friends in other rooms running. He unholstered the knife instead, feeling the buzz of power against his palm. He needed to attack fast, before the guard had the time to ready his own weapons, so Alex sprinted across the floor and lunged at the man. He just hoped that the speed and shock of the surprise attack would keep him off-balance, as he really didn’t have time to waste on every obstacle he came across.
“Come on, you fucker,” he murmured, eyes narrowed in concentration, dropping naturally into a combat stance.

POWER & CONTROL The guard turned to see the man just as he ran towards him. Reaching for a night stick he wasn't fast enough as the taunt was only half heartedly heard. His hand grabbed the handle of the weapon just as he felt electricity shoot through his body. The numbing pain was enough to make him open his mouth but no words would leave his mouth. He wanted to scream, wanted to let the others know but instead nothing would leave his mouth. Pain. It was the only thing his body knew. He knew his death would be quick. The guard knew nothing as of why he was being killed or even who his killer was. He was dying doing his duty to the Delta Sector. The pain would end and he would pass onward. His eyes set into his killers eyes with a look not of hatred but some kind of thanks. He would be freed from his duties and be allowed a life where he might have a chance at freedom of thought.
As the man slipped into death he was left feeling freed from unseen chains. The killer would be free to do what he pleased but he would not leave without feeling the death on his hands. There were enough of them on night duty to keep this killer entertained. This killer would die tonight, just not by his own hands.
