TRAIN OF THOUGHT alpha core / march 4th / 1:04 pm It was a normal day for Tobias. He had an extended lunch break and he planned on spending it how he normally did. He stood in line at the coffee shop. He knew it was always busy within the core of the Alpha Sector but everyday he seemed to mentally ask how long it took to make a coffee. The line seemed to continue to grow as the minutes past without ever really shrinking. The coffee shop itself was not out of the ordinary, there weren't many in the core of the sector as they were more common in the middle ring but Tobias didn't have time to go too far from his research building. He had to be back to work relatively soon and he was not down to be late. He was already new to his position, he didn't want any more pressure and heat from his coworkers - let alone his bosses.
He tapped his foot impatiently as he waited in line. He knew there were other options when it came to food and drink but there was something about tradition that drew him to the small shop every lunch hour. He was clad in his white lab coat, his blue identification badge hung off his breast with pride. He had earned the access increase and since the promotion seemed to walk with a slight bounce in his step. He wanted a patrol to ask him to stop so he could show off who he was, even if the photo wasn't the most flattering of him. He knew it was overly vain and maybe a little vapid but he was tired of always keeping his head down and working. There was nothing wrong with a little self pride was there? In his mind, he had earned his promotion. Yes, it wasn't everything he had hoped it was but the pressure to produce results was worth it. It was as a small smile played across his lips that he felt someone bump into him. Apparently the line was moving forward and Toby hadn't noticed. He grumbled out an apology as he shuffled forward like he was suppose to. Maybe he was good at keeping his head down. Turning to the person that had bumped into him Toby gave a professional smile before clearing his throat slightly.

Post by Emilia Blackburn on May 17, 2014 1:57:45 GMT
► Emilia Blackburn train of thought march 4th 11:47 AM | Emilia rolled over in her makeshift bed atop one of the many under-construction building on the inner edge of the housing district and felt the warm embrace of the sun upon her dirty face. Well, bed may be giving it more credit than it deserved. What the girl lay upon was no more than a discarded tarp folded over a few times with nothing but her small hoodie to warm her tired body. She shivered throughout the night as the temperatures approached freezing, holding her arms and legs close and nursing her wounded hand. Glancing down at it, she noticed the bleeding had stopped completely, and slowly lifted the chunk of fabric ripped from her shirt she had wrapped around it the night before. The sight of the deep wound reminded her of the events of yesterday, still fresh in her mind. Tears began to drip down the side of her face as she played back the escape from her home in her mind. She stared down at the ground and tried to make sense of it all. She remembered her parents' awkward behaviour the morning before and wondered what it was they were trying to hide. What could they have possibly gotten themselves into that would lead to their entire family being hunted? A part of her hoped they were still alive somewhere, but she knew that wasn't true. It was no rarity for normal people to disappear without a trace, never to be seen again. Emilia had heard horror stories about missing people being tortured and having tests performed on them, but to her those just seemed like silly stories meant to scare people. From what she had heard, when people knew too much they disappeared, simple as that.
Emilia's thoughts were interrupted by a low growl and her head spun wildly as she looked for the source, before realizing it was simply her stomach. She stood up slowly and raised her arms above her head, stretching her back. She hadn't remembered to bring a watch but she knew she had slept in longer than intended. Hearing the construction workers approaching below, the young lady quickly began gathering the few possessions she still had. As far as the young blonde was concerned, the less people that saw her, the better. Letting out a sigh, she leaned down and reached for her well-used navy blue hoodie. She had received it as a gift for her birthday a few months ago, and at the time found it to be a bit plain and boring, but she was sure glad to have it now. She felt the soft cotton on her fingertips and lifted it slowly. She checked the right pocket to make sure the knife was still there, and sure enough it was. Mia wasn't sure if it would even help her or not in a combat situation. She had no experience whatsoever fighting with blades, and thought it just as likely she'd find herself with it being used against her, but it still provided her some comfort having it stuffed in her pocket. She had managed to snag her parents payment card in the struggle, and it sat loosely in the other pocket. She slipped on the hoodie and shook about a bit, adjusting it to her liking. It was a bit dirty, but the sleeves covered her bloody hand and ripped shirt, and that was all she was really concerned about right now.
She made her way down the bare concrete stairs of the building and easily snuck past the construction workers chatting by the door. Her legs ached from all the running she had done the night before but she had to get something to eat. Mia could see the massive skyscrapers of the inner ring towering before her a few kilometres away, and figured she was close enough that it would be quicker to find a coffee shop or something there than to try and find her way out of the development zone. She walked for about an hour as more and more people began to appear and the buildings transitioned from quaint 3 story homes to behemoth towers that pierced the sky. Mia tried to act natural and hoped no one would notice her, and so far it seemed to be working. The attractive teen looked out of place in the endless field of lab coats and business suits, but most people seemed to mind their own business, the ones that didn't never going farther than a cautionary glance as she passed. She noticed a small coffee shop on the left that didn't seem as busy as some of the larger restaurants. Taking a final fleeting look around, the blonde slowly pushed open the door, the scent of baked goods wafting out.
Inside she was greeted by more boring looking people in lab coats. She could see workers preparing coffee and various foods in the back while customers sat at small wooden tables enjoying their lunches. Emilia pulled out her parents' payment card and flipped it around in her hand. She had no idea how much money was left on it, if any at all. It was entirely possible it had been wiped. The line slowly lurched onward until she was finally able to order. The attendant looked up from the desk and smiled. He was wearing a brown loose-fitting shirt that didn't particularly flatter him.
"What can I get for you, young lady?"
"Oh, umm. I'll have a banana muffin and maybe a small coffee, please." She didn't particularly like coffee but she was thirsty and it would give her some energy. As the workers prepared her order Mia turned around and noticed a man a few spots behind her in the line with a blue-level identification card. A devious thought crossed her mind. A day ago, stealing would have never even crossed her mind, but she yearned to know more about what happened to her parents. A few moments later the cashier handed her a bag and kindly asked her to swipe her card. Mia examined her parents' card again and swiped it down the side of the machine. A reassuring beep reached her ears and she pocketed the card, relieved. Now for that other card...
"Excuse me, where's the washroom?" she said, turning her head back to the cashier. She knew very well that the washroom was right by the exit but it looked less suspicious this way. The man confirmed that the washroom was indeed the door by the exit with a man and a woman on it, and she began walking towards it, careful to stay close to the line.
The man didn't seem to be paying too much attention to the people around him, so Emilia made her move. As he got within arms reach she looked down and purposefully bumped into him. In an instant, the young girl reached upwards and wrapped her nimble fingers around the ID card's clasp and quickly unhooked it from his coat, slipping the thin piece of plastic into her sleeve with one slick motion. Emilia had always been a little too curious and she had plenty of experience "borrowing" IDs from the teachers at her school to access parts of the building that were off limits to students, so she had no trouble taking it from the inattentive young man that stood before her. The fact that he had a blue level ID card in the first place meant he was no idiot, but she seemed to have caught him in a moment of tiredness. Or, maybe not. He began opening his mouth to say something and she started to panic. If the guards arrest me I'm screwed she thought, looking around for an escape route.
"Do you have the time by any chance?" the man spoke with a calm, patient voice. Mia relaxed and took a second to collect her thoughts before responding. That voice sounded familiar. She looked up at his face and realized who she had just stolen from. It was Tobias Quinn. She had heard her parents say good things about him on more than one occasion but she'd only met him once or twice as far as she remembered. She desperately hoped he wouldn't recognize her and she'd be able to get out of there quickly. She could feel her palms getting exponentially sweatier as the seconds drew on.
"Ughh, no, sorry, gotta go." Emilia murmured awkwardly as she began to turn around and make her way towards the exit.

TRAIN OF THOUGHT

TRAIN OF THOUGHT emilia b. / sorry for the late reply! Tobias usually prided himself in the fact he was usually very good at his job. It required a large amount of patience, observation and most of all revolutionary thinking. As a person he found it difficult to separate himself from these skills causing him to be the pinnacle of professionalism. He would be the first to admit his job is truly never done, and going forward his work collided with his everyday life in a negative way. It was because of this as he turned to ask the woman for time he didn’t even have to take a second glance to know something was wrong. He knew her – Tobias didn’t really associate with people so young so how he knew this girl was a mystery for now. He hadn’t noticed that the badge he wore was gone but what he did notice was a misplaced look on this woman’s face. She was up to something. Her face looked very familiar as well.
”Blackburn?”
He didn’t know why he said it, to be fair he could not really remember her name but he did know his coffee break would have to wait. Within the Biome it was no mystery what happened to families when things went wrong, including the Blackburns. Tobias grabbed her by the arm before she could get away, she needed to get out of here - NOW. This girl was suppose to go missing but here she was before him. The thought that he could be killed for this hadn’t crossed his mind yet but he had worked alongside the Blackburns for a majority of his life. He had to help their child somehow, it was the right thing to do. With a small hiss he quickly left the line, not daring to look down at the girl in fear someone might notice their situation. In a hushed voice he addressed the girl. ”I am not going to ask how you are alive but I am going to try and make sure you stay that way.” He continued to walk with his hands clenched across her arm. The sweater she wore mixed with her tangled hair probably meant she was not at a proper home. He had no idea where he was taking her but he knew he had to get her out of harms way. He had to.
He would call in sick to work or maybe ask for a prolonged break as he had received a migraine. He would make sure she was safe. He still hadn’t realized his badge was missing because he was too preoccupied thinking 100 miles an hour. He had to get this girl to safety and the only thing he could think of was maybe brining her to his house where she might be safe. Toby was not being looked into by the Officials, she would be safe for a while there until they could figure out what they were going to do. ”I worked with your parents, don’t worry we will get you somewhere sfae.” Tobias didn’t know if he was talking to her or talking himself into breaking the law. Either way Tobias started to walk towards the middle ring where his house was. It would be a long walk but it was necessary. She had to be kept safe.

| "What about our food?" Emilia protested as the researcher grasped her sweater and pulled her outside. She hadn't eaten the night before and an unpleasant bitter taste lingered on her tongue. Few people seemed to pay much attention to the young man escorting her out of the shop, perhaps assuming they were related in some way. She put up no fight as Tobias opened the door and pulled her outside. He seemed to be in a bit of a panic internally but he did a good job of hiding it. After taking a few steps outside Emlia shook him off her arm and continued to follow.
As they walked Mia debated telling him about the identification card. He hadn't seemed to notice, preoccupied with ensuring no one was following. She had a few options - admit what she had done and hope it didn't piss him off enough to report her, drop the card behind and point it out to him, or try to slip it into his pocket and hope he didn't feel it. She quickly discounted the latter idea. Even if he didn't notice the card entering his pocket, it would be obvious what had happened when he went looking for it.
Emilia didn't really know where exactly she was being taken but trailed along anyway. Tobias did not seem to be hostile and he was her best shot at finding out more about her parents' research. She knew he was taking a big risk by helping her so she'd try to assist him in anyway she could.
As they entered the housing district the young girl began to fall behind slightly, distracted by her thoughts. As the pair passed a run-down looking home, the distinctive jangle of the guards' equipment filled her ears. By the sound of it they were no more than a few metres behind them, and she wasn't sure what would happen when they turned the corner. She whipped her head back and forth looking for somewhere to hide and spotted a dark crevice in the side of one of the buildings. She shot towards it before realizing she still had Toby's ID. She'd have to worry about the consequences later. The young researcher needed that card.
"Mr. Quinn!" Mia shouted in a hushed voice. She pulled the card from her pocket and hurled it towards him as the guards began to turn the corner. The card fluttered through the air but fell short by a few feet, landing in front of him. She hoped he'd be able to get to it in time, but sunk deeper into the damaged wall and drew her knife, just in case something went awry.

TRAIN OF THOUGHT emilia b. His grip on the girl was broken as she figured out what he was doing. He was a friend of his parents, he couldn't just let their only child be left to be killed - or worse. His watchful eye continued to trace along the passing people, if anyone recognized her they were done for. It was then that Tobias realized just how screwed and involved he had made himself. He could die for this and he couldn't even remember the girls name. A frown creased his forehead as they walked. Tobias was a felon. He would be murdered in his sleep, he had just gotten this promotion and now they were going to kill him. Tobias made no reply to her inquiry about the food, anytime they spent in public was more time to be caught.
She could eat when they got to his house, even if it wasn't the best hideout he could imagine it would work very very well for the time being. He wasn't really sure how much time had passed but he was positive they had been walking a while when he heard the clunking of armour. It could only be the Security board's doing. There was no question in his mind that things could go so very wrong in the passing moments. He turned to check behind them as they turned a corner. When he turned back around he heard the girl call him and throw his badge. She appeared to be gone.
His surge of anger had no real time to manifest as he realized the girl had taken his badge. It was a blue badge for peats sake! The girl had a death wish as he rushed to pick it up. As he turned around he clipped it back into the proper place on his lab coat just in time. "Officers" He dipped his head as they walked by without a word. One of them glanced at his identification card but the moment was overly anticlimactic. They apparently were too wrapped up in whatever it was they were doing to notice the girl he had been with had disappeared into thin air. As he heard their clunky armour leaving he let out an urgent whisper. "Are you crazy? You almost had us killed!" Tobias took off down the street in a brisk walk, his anger being muffled by his professionalism. She would follow, she had to if she wanted sanctum. His house wasn't too much farther and then he would figure out what it was he was doing exactly.

| Emilia watched as the guards passed. It was clear from the look on his face that Tobias was angry, but that would have to be dealt with later. She slipped out from the crack and felt her stomach growl. Surely his house couldn't be too far now. She jogged to catch up to him as he stormed off.
"Look, Mr. Quinn, I'm sorry. I didn't know it was you when I took it." she pleaded. Mia did actually feel bad. Had she known who she was stealing from it would have never crossed her mind. She didn't expect him to forgive her just yet but hoped in time she would earn his trust back. After all, he was all she had.

TRAIN OF THOUGHT emilia b. Tobias continued to walk. The girl apologized to him but he felt nothing. He had to remain professional. It was the reason he had remained under the radar for so long. With his new promotion he had to be even more cautious if he were to play things smart. Yes, the girl had been stupid but he had to remember it was miracle she was alive. It was probably why she was alive, having nothing truly pushed people to a survival point. They either lived or didn't make the cut. He pulled out the keys to his house. He didn't reply to the girl, some part of him wanted to be sassy and ask what else she would steal from him but instead Toby walked upward to his three level townhouse. It had once been only one floor being his and the other two his parents but now it was just him. Their death made a bad taste enter his mouth. The foyer of the house was bright, the stairway leading upward would house a bedroom and a bathroom along with a rec room. The current floor he entered had a dining room and the kitchen.
"Kitchen is the first door on the left"
Tobias started heading upstairs. His bedroom was on the top floor but he was not thinking of going to take a nap. He was going to splash cold water on his face. This whole situation would get him killed. He did have more than enough space but if she was detained he would die. He climbed the stairs slowly, his expression staring off into space as he contemplated his upcoming death sentence. "I think I have some left over chicken, just don't make a mess." He called down the stairs as he reached the second floor. Every townhouse within the middle ring was a similar shape. Three floors, sometimes shared while other times private. Toby knew his parents had been very well off but it had cost them their lives. Tobias didn't even know the Blackburn's very well. What was he doing saving the life of a stranger only to shorten his life and prolong hers. He was the dumbest smart person ever.

| Tobias had made it clear to her that he didn't want to talk and right now all she could think about was eating. When the pair finally reached the young researcher's home Mia felt like her legs could give out at any moment. She waited anxiously as he slipped the key into the lock and disengaged it with a twist of his wrist.
He entered the home and let her know where the kitchen was before heading up stairs without another word. She closed the door behind her and took a look around. Fairly ordinary. As she approached the kitchen she heard him say something about chicken. She stopped for a moment but didn't reply.
The mention of chicken had the young woman's stomach grumbling again and she jogged the remainder of the distance to the kitchen. She had never really cooked much before so she hoped the chicken in question was already cooked. She tore open the fridge and spotted it in a small plastic container. She removed the lid and took a closer look. Definitely cooked. Mia glanced behind her to make sure Tobias wasn't back before plucking the small pieces of chicken out one at a time and shoving them in her mouth, not even taking the time to wash her hands or grab a plate. That could wait. Right now stuffing herself with as much food as possible was at the top of her to-do list. She spotted a small bowl of apples on the counter and grabbed one and bit into it before leaving the room.
She walked towards the dining room to have a seat before stopping to take another bite of the apple. As Mia raised her arm to her face she realized just how dirty she was. A thick layer of dirt coated her fingers and she smelled like something had died from the combination of dried blood and garbage.
She trudged over to the staircase and bent her neck around the corner. "You got a shower or something I can use? Sorry about your card again..."

TRAIN OF THOUGHT emilia b. Tobias ran the tap, bending over to get closer to the running water. He splashed the cold water on his face, his skin prickling at the temperature. He still had no idea how such a smart man could get wrapped up in all this bullshit, he could die tomorrow because of this. He should have reported her, it was not his job to be a babysitter let alone become some felon. The Blackburn's were a nice family, they had tried their best keeping their heads down. Apparently they hadn't tried hard enough as they were most likely dead. Tobias didn't know why they had gone missing, no one ever really explained anything the Officials did. It was frustrating but as Tobias washed his face he managed to at least get his bearings straight.
He heard her call up at him. He wanted to get mad at her but she was just a kid. Yes, she was ungrateful but whatever. Tobias would have to deal with her now. This whole situation was his fault, yes it was because of the girl but Tobias had saved her life. It was a small success, Officials would be looking for her. Tobias had done a lot of questionable things in his life, he had cut people open in search of potentials, he had gone into the void looking for test subjects before. Tobias was not the hero in some story. He might want to be but society held him down. He was useless, he was weak and most of all he kept his head down like everyone else. "Shower is just upstairs." Tobias yelled down at her. He shut off the tap before heading downstairs. He still had to contact work alerting them that he wouldn't be returning. They probably pieced it together by now but it was still the right thing to do to avoid suspicion.
He was back on the main floor as he walked past the dining room to get to the kitchen. He hadn't had company over since the death of his parents. He shivered, now was not the time to think about it. She would take a shower, Tobias would cook some kind of meal and they would take about what happened next. On that note he started preparing food. He had to feed the girl, no point in letting her starve if he had just saved her from death.

| Emilia trudged up the stairs towards the shower, passing Tobias without a word. She turned the corner and saw the bathroom a few feet away. The young girl had barely closed the door when her torn and dirty clothes came flying off. As the water hit her tired body she thought for a second that maybe things would be alright after-all. She stood under the water for what seemed like an eternity, waiting as it washed away her tears. If she was going to make anything of her life she would have to learn to accept her parents' death and turn her anger into something useful.
One day she would discover the reason for their disappearance. Until that day came Emilia would do everything in her power to stay alive.
